Definition

Maintenance margin is the minimum eligible account equity that must continue supporting an open leveraged position after the position has been established.

In market context

The requirement may differ from initial margin and can increase with volatility, concentration, regulation, or platform risk settings. If losses reduce equity below the applicable threshold, the account may receive a margin warning, face restrictions, or undergo liquidation. Depositing funds after a breach may not prevent forced action if prices move faster than the transfer can settle or the platform can apply it.

Risk context

Maintenance requirements can change, and a platform may liquidate positions without waiting for the user to respond.
